Ruthless Misfit – Coming Soon!

Eeeee, I cannot wait for this book to come out! We’ve got a grouchy heroine and I love her SO MUCH. She’s like my spirit animal, haha. And Matt–for a liar, he’s pretty damn sincere when it comes to Erena.

How about a mini excerpt to get us ready for release next week?

“Can we just not do this?” Erena said in a weary voice.

“Look, we’re both going to be living here for awhile,” Matt said. “And you’re very pretty—”

She stood up, brushed off her pants, and walked away. Matt had to remember to close his mouth.

He looked around the fire pit. Everyone in the clan was staring at him, waiting to see what he would do. Kayla was openly laughing—she was seemed to be getting a kick out of seeing him shot down.

Frowning, he stood up and started after Erena. From the corner of his eye he could see Margot shaking her head. Trying, once again, to warn him off. Her expression seemed to say, Don’t follow her if you know what’s good for you.

Well, Matt had never paid much attention to what was good for him. And as Erena disappeared within the trees, his inner mountain lion perked up. The very attractive woman was retreating, and cats loved nothing more than to give chase.

Planners, Calendars, and Goals!

Yes, honey, I know. It’s January 1st and could we please just recover from staying up too late last night instead of talking about resolutions?

Nope. I didn’t stay up late, mwahahaha, and I’m ready to kick some ass this year!

My tools include books, two calendars, and a publishing schedule that will probably have me hiding under the bed come March. Oh, and my phone’s yoga app, because a set of resolutions isn’t complete without some kind of promise to get in shape.

Four books are on my January reading list, two of which I’ve already read at least once (twice, in the case of Deep Work).

  • You Are a Badass, by Jen Sincero
  • Your Best Year Ever, by Michael Hyatt
  • The Power of Full Engagement, by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz
  • Deep Work, by Cal Newport

goals

Two calendars–one is my planner. I’m branching out this year and moving beyond my 3-ring binder with the removable calendar pages. Instead, I’ll be using a Simple Elephant planner. I like the space it has for a mini vision board and goal-setting–not only for the beginning of the year, but for each week. Also, lots of pages at the back for notes and scribbles about how I might take over the world and spread the joy of paranormal romance throughout the land. (The downside is it doesn’t lie flat and I’m already fighting with it. I was giving the Happy Planners at Michael’s a longing gaze last week. My next planner will be spiral-bound!)

The other calendar is a boring 8.5×11 monthly agenda. I need a spot to keep track of what I’m publishing and when, with a nice big view of each month. I can also keep track of when I’m sharing friends’ books, and when they’re sharing mine, as well as giveaway start and end dates.

The publishing schedule has me releasing a Fierce Mates book every other month. This isn’t too ambitious on its own…but when we factor in all the reverse harem projects I’m writing and publishing with Keira in 2019, it might start to feel like a lot. We shall see!

Unusual Shapeshifters

When I asked my newsletter subscribers about “out of the ordinary” shifters, they came through for me! Click on the title and author to go to the Goodreads page for that book, or one of the books in the series.

strange shifters

DISCLAIMER: I have not read all–or even most–of these books. This info came from reader volunteers who are generous with their time and experience. I tried to double-check shifter characters when they were listed in the book descriptions, but the details aren’t always available. If you find a mistake, please let me know and I’ll fix it in the post! 🙂

Birds

HAWK: King of Prey by Mandy Roth.

VULTURE: Trials of a Werevulture, by Emily Martha Sorensen.

RAVEN. Revenge, by Keira Blackwood.

Mammals (that can be found in nature)

HEDGEHOGS: Hedging His Bets, by Celia Kyle and Mina Carter.

Hedging Her Bets, by Erzabet Bishop.

Prickly Business, by Piper Vaughn and Kenzie Cade.

PORCUPINE: Grizzly Attraction by Hattie Hunt.

DEER: Frost Brothers’ Brides series, Anya Nowlan. A reader also told me she has a gorilla shifter, but I couldn’t track that one down.

BUNNY: His Bunny Kicks Sass, by Dawn Sullivan. Bunny in book 1, fox in Book 2.

KOALA: The Luck of the Shifters, by Bianca D’Arc.

SHEEP: Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, by Lauren Esker. (The sheep shifter is paired with a wolf!) There are reportedly other exciting shifters in her Shifter Agents series.

STALLION: Blackwood Stallions series, by Rachel Real.

MOLE: Love at first Roar, by Celia Kyle.

SQUIRREL: Squirrel Bait, by Chip Davis. (Note: this doesn’t look like a PNR book, but it does look interesting!)

FOX: For Fox Sake by Emma Dean.

CHINCHILLA: Gumption & Gumshoes, by Alex Kidwell.

Reptiles

SNAKE: Viper Game, by Christine Feehan. This is part of a series with genetically modified people who turn into shifters.

CROCODILE: Shifters of Soho series, by J.S. Striker. The crocodile shifter is in Book 3.

Fish

SHARKS: The Master Shark’s Mate, by Zoe Chant. Shark and coyote. Chant’s Fire and Rescue series also includes a Pegasus, a griffin, a unicorn, and a phoenix.

Touching Paradise (Shark Shifter series), by Cleo Peitsche.

OTHER FISH AND MARINE ANIMALS: Lords of the Abyss series, by Michelle M. Pillow. A reader also said she has great stories about falcons and birds of prey, but I haven’t yet had time to hunt them down (Goodreads is showing over 150 books for this author!).

Other (extinct or imaginary animals, insects, plants, and babies)

SELKIE: The Bear’s Matchmaker, by Emilia Hartley.

SABERTOOTHS: Bearpaw Ridge Firefighters series, by Ophelia Sexton. Books 3 and 4 contain Sabertooth Tigers.

BUTTERFLY: Hounded, by Tasha Black. The butterfly is paired with a dog.

IVY (YES, A PLANT!) SHIFTER: Unbound, by Elle Thorne.

GARGOYLE: Stone Heart, by Ariel Marie. In addition to gargoyles in this series, there is an Elven princess.

KRAKEN: Treasure of the Abyss by Tiffany Roberts.

BABY ANIMALS: Alpha Unit One, New York, by Chris T. Kat.–according to the reader who shared this one with me, the characters are adult humans, but when they shift, they become baby animals.

Collections of different shapeshifters

Poisoned Pen, by Zenina Masters. Snake and swan. (She has a unicorn, beavers and others in the Shifting Crossroads series.)

Hotel Safari series, by Tori Knightwood. Giraffe in Book 3, elephant in Book 5.

Furry United Coalition series, by Eve Langlais. This is a series with several different shifters–rabbit, fox, swan, crocodile, doe, falcon, ostrich, kangaroo.

Kodiac Point series, by Eve Langlais. Fox and a moose, among more ‘normal’ shifters.

Bitten Point series, by Eve Langlais. Crocodile, python, among others.

Anita Black, Vampire Hunter series, by Laurell K Hamilton. According to one reader, “she has had snakes, dolphins along with the normal ones of wolves, panthers, lions, foxes.”

Big Bad Bunnies series, by Golden Angel. Bunny, squirrel, turtle hybrids, and others.

Safari Shifters series, by Lola Kidd. Rhinoceros, crocodiles, gazelle, elephants.

Were Zoo series, by RE Butler. Includes gorillas, elephants, and more.

My mind is blown.

I had no idea there was such a wealth of shifters out there–this is an incredible list. If you think of more to add, feel free to drop them in the comments! One thing that creating this post has taught me is that the only limit to creating shapeshifting characters is our imagination, and our imaginations are, apparently, limitless.

Thank you!

Shout-outs and thank-yous to the readers who helped me track down these unconventional shifters! Sue, Leanne, Ruth, Kim, Christal, Amanda, Carletta, Donna, Rebecca, Ching, Sue, Joanne, Jody, Shirl, Melissa, Lauren at Romance Novel Giveaways, Amy, Lynn, Ruth, Leslie, Rachal, and Lisa!

Stuff I Love: Lost Girl

lost girlIn the Facebook reader group I run with Keira Blackwood and Tori Knightwood, Paranormal Paramours, a bunch of us started talking about Lost Girl. I can’t remember how or why–it probably started with a gif that I was clueless about, which is how I often discover television shows and movies I’ve missed!

At any rate, the “hook” of the series got me right away–the heroine of the show is a succubus named Bo and she fights fae crime. Heck yes! I had to check it out.

What I love about this show is the mystery, the magic, and Kenzi. All the characters, really, but Kenzi just makes me smile.

Right now I’m nearing the end of Season 2. I’m pacing myself and watching an episode a day while I eat my lunch. It’s a lot of fun and I’m totally shipping Kenzi and Hale, and if nothing comes of that, I’ll be searching for fanfic because I reallllly want to see them together!

It’s kind of bizarre coming late to a show that everyone has already watched, when spoilers abound on the internet (yeah, I accidentally found out how the end of Season 4 goes), but it’s also a chill and stress-free way to watch a series.

How about you? Have you seen it? Is the best still yet to come for me in this series?

Halloween Between the Sheets – A Reverse Harem Anthology

Keira Blackwood and I are so thrilled to have a scene included in this anthology! The subtitle says it all: “A reverse harem anthology of scenes that get to the point.” This anthology is full of steamy pages to keep your October nice and hot. 🙂

Halloween BTS

Below is a little teaser from Keira’s and my scene:

“Everything okay?” Taylor asked, moving from my lips to my jaw and down to my neck. He licked and kissed the spot that always drove me crazy, and I tightened my legs around his waist.

Slade’s arms came around from the back, cupping my breasts underneath the loose fabric of my gown.

“Mm-hmm,” I replied, half to the question, half to the sensation. And everything was all right. We were safe, Slade, Taylor, Quentin, me, and the little lima bean in my belly. It was still hard to believe the pregnancy was real. There was a tiny dragon shifter in there. Growing, thriving.

I slid down Taylor’s body, ready to get undressed. While Taylor pulled down the sleeves of my gown, Slade pressed kisses to my bare back. The fabric of my dress pooled at my feet and I stood before them in my lacy blue thong and iridescent white heels.

Reaching down, I started inching my fingers toward the front of Slade’s kilt. His eyes fluttered shut as I tugged at the fabric. “Off,” I said.

His hands were a blur as he unfastened the kilt and let it fall to the floor.

I’d seen him naked every day for a year, but I still stared in awe each time he stripped as if it were the first glimpse. I allowed my gaze to linger, taking in every inch of muscular, tan skin, before looking over to Taylor.

His green eyes were dark with anticipation.

Their scents surrounded me, and I gladly breathed them in–hazelnut, metal, and fire.

I reached for the white faux-fur of Taylor’s red suit and unfastened the buttons, slowly starting from the top.

Slade kissed my neck as I worked to undress Taylor. His lips left a burning trail of desire on my skin, and my hands shook as I fumbled with Taylor’s buttons.

“Next year,” I murmured, breathing heavily, “next year you have to wear less clothes for your costume.”
