Secrets of a Soprano, by Miranda Neville

secrets of a soprano cover

This little gem of a book was a delight! It’s about an opera singer and the guy she fell in love with years ago. Teresa Foscari, the heroine, is serious about her art and performing. She’s well-known and admired, and her presence in any opera house would elevate that house in reputation and earnings.

Her former flame, Maximilian Hawthorne, both resents and yearns for her. His internal conflict, and hers, at being thrust together once more are simply delicious.

And the historical detail! Wow! I read this some time ago and I’m still captivated by the setting–I might have to give this one a second read, just to return to those opera houses and the music, and the side characters who made my heart happy.

Trigger warning–the heroine suffered some sexual trauma before the start of the novel.

Three Recent Loves

These books! Okay, let’s do this.

Truth or Beard, by Penny Reid. This was funny! It contained Reid’s usual humor and sense of fun geekery. Seriously, can’t recommend her enough to people.

A Lady Awakened, by Celia Grant. Both of these characters developed so well and thoroughly throughout the story, it was super satisfying to experience. I was also dreadfully curious as to how everything would work out, so if you like not being able to guess an ending, this is a good choice.

Adulthood is a Myth, by Sarah Andersen. Simply hilarious. Maybe took me twenty minutes to read, but I plan on going back through over and over again. As with Allie Brosch’s illustrations, Andersen’s are deceptively simple, yet she conveys so much with just the placement of the pupils within the eyeballs. I’m in awe of this kind of craft.
